چکیده

One of the remaining challenges when reconstructing a surface from a finite sample is recovering non-smooth surface features like sharp edges. There is practical evidence showing that a two step approach could be an aid to this problem, namely, first computing a polyhedral reconstruction isotopic to the sampled surface, and secondly minimizing the absolute Gaussian curvature of this reconstruction globally. The first step ensures topological correctness and the second step improves the geometric accuracy of the reconstruction in the presence of sharp features without changing its topology. Unfortunately it is computationally hard to minimize the absolute Gaussian curvature globally. Hence we study a local variant of absolute Gaussian curvature minimization problem which is still meaningful in the context of surface fairing. Absolute Gaussian curvature like Gaussian curvature is concentrated at the vertices of a polyhedral surface embedded into R. Local optimization tries to move a single vertex in space such that the absolute Gaussian curvature at this vertex is minimized. We show that in general it is algebraically hard to find the optimal position of a vertex. By algebraically hard we mean that in general an optimal solution is not constructible, i.e., there exist no finite sequence of expressions starting with rational numbers, where each expression is either the sum, difference, product, quotient or k’th root of preceding expressions and the last expressions give the coordinates of an optimal solution. Hence the only option left is to approximate the optimal position. We provide an approximation scheme for the minimum possible value of the absolute Gaussian curvature at a vertex.

Two Topics in Geometry: Minimizing Absolute Gaussian Curvature Locally and Solution Path of the Slab Support Vector Machine

In this thesis we deal with two geometric optimization problems: Minimizing Absolute Gaussian Curvatue Locally in Meshes and the Solution path of the Slab Support Vector Machine. In the first part, we show that given a polygon C in R it is in general algebraically hard to find a point in R3\C at which the absolute Gaussian curvature with respect to C is minimized. By algebraically hard we mean ...

On curvature and feedback classification of two-dimensional optimal control systems

The goal of this paper is to extend to two-dimensional optimal control systems with scalar input the classical notion of Gaussian curvature of two-dimensional Riemannian surface using the Cartan’s moving frame method. This notion was already introduced by A. A. Agrachev and R. V. Gamkrelidze for more general control systems using a purely variational approach. Then we will see that the “control...

The Variational Origin of Motion by Gaussian Curvature

A variational formulation of an image analysis problem has the nice feature that it is often easier to predict the e ect of minimizing a certain energy functional than to interpret the corresponding EulerLagrange equations. For example, the equations of motion for an active contour usually contains a mean curvature term, which we know will regularizes the contour because mean curvature is the r...

Surface Patch Reconstruction From "One-Dimensional" Tactile Data

This paper studies the reconstruction of unknown curved surfaces through finger tracking. A patch can be generated from tactile data points along three concurrent surface curves under the Darboux frame estimated at the curve intersection point. Surface fitting while minimizing the total (absolute) Gaussian curvature effectively prevents unnecessary folds otherwise expected to result from the us...
